Class Content: Class Content: This is your chance to enter the world of book binding. Each student will create two 4.5” tall by 6” wide journals using the ancient four-hole stab-stitch binding technique which originated in Japan hundreds of years ago. The first journal will feature front and back covers of high quality scrapbook paper and the second will have handsome handmade paper covers and include a traditional stick decoration. Twenty-five sheets (50 pages) of good quality drawing or buttery sulfate writing paper will be provided for each as well as waxed linen thread and suitable needle. The price also includes a nice quality book binding awl and bamboo bone folder. All you bring are scissors, ruler, pencil, thimble(s), needle-nose pliers (optional) and an old text book, phone book or thick magazine that you don’t care about to be used as backing for punching holes.
During class, you will tear the pages, punch the holes and sew the adorable journal, although no sewing experience is required. Best of all, you’ll leave, not only with books that you made, but with a template, tools, instructions and resource list that will allow you to create more journals at home. These versatile books fit nicely in a purse or bag and the inside paper choices can be modified to use watercolor paper, graph or even regular copy paper. The addition of black cardstock turns it into a cute photo/brag book and mixed media paper will create a ‘must take-along’ book for artists. Great for journaling, poetry, painting, drawing and photographs, they’ll be perfect gifts for family and friends this holiday season.
