Workshop Content: Want to have some fun? Try something new? Yupo has some surprises for you. Did you know you can weave it; burn holes in it; fold it; paint on it; collage on it; write on it; stamp it; draw on it and apply any of these techniques in combination. Join this workshop and we’ll experiment and have fun. We’ll try several media and techniques and combine techniques. I’ll demonstrate, you’ll try your hand at it and we will critique the results at the end of each day. We will learn by doing and observing what others create.
Day One: We will go over the unique qualities of Yupo and how these qualities make wonderful and innovative paintings possible. I will demonstrate painting with watercolor, acrylic and alcohol paints and inks and you will try them for yourself. I’ll demonstrate using different media in combination as well as adding collage, explaining the order of layering the different media to achieve the best results. Then you will try a couple of paintings yourself using both ink and paint. You will then create two or more multimedia paintings using layering techniques. I will explain critique approaches, and we will critique everyone’s art as a group.
Day Two: I’ll demonstrate a folded painting, weaving with Yupo to create a painting, and how to burn holes in Yupo to create a 3-D painting. I’ll demonstrate the steps for weaving and for burning holes in Yupo. We’ll all prepare at least two paintings to weave and burn beginning today and continuing on Day 3. We’ll critique today’s paintings considering which might work well for weaving or burning.
Day Three: You can finish your paintings from Day Two and/or create new ones. I’ll review each of your paintings individually and discuss which are the best candidates for the weaving and burning techniques. Then you can try these techniques yourself with your paintings. We’ll critique paintings and go through what we have learned, what surprised us and what inspired us.
